Datsun 240Z Restoration - Bare Metal to Primer Perfection (Part 4)
In this video I'm continuing the restoration on my 1973 Datsun 240Z. After all the bodywork and the panel alignment in the last episode the car was finally ready to start with the paint job.
The first step for a new paint job is, to get all the old paint removed doen to the bare metal. I brought the car to a blasting company. They completely blasted the whole car and all the parts. For paint removal they used walnut shells. This is the perfect media for that job, because it does not warp any of the panels. Only downside is that it doesn't remove rust and it also doesn't roughen up the surface, which is not ideal for paint to stick. So after the paint was stripped with the walnut shells, they used aluminium oxide to remove the rust and also roughen up the surface all around. The total blasting took around 11 hours. Blasted parts do rust very quickly, so it is very important to protect the metal right after it. It's also very important to not touch any of the blasted parts with bare hands. Therfore all the sheet got protected with a layer of zinc dust primer. It's a polyurethane based primer which is moisture curing. It is very elastic and doesn't chip, it really becomes one with the metal, like zinc plating. After the zinc dust primer you can touch it and move the car without having to worry about rust.
For building up the paint I still need to apply one coat of epoxy primer. It will isolate the zinc dust primer and will be the base of the coming paint. To get good adhesion I sanded the zinc dust primer with 240 grit everywhere and washed it all off with silicone remover to get it grease free. The car was put on the rotisserie for that. Epoxy was applied first inside of the car, then engine bay and then on the outside starting with the roof. After it was dry to touch the car was turned 90° to paint the underside. It's important to let it dry before turning because it always could come out a little sand from the cavities and drip into the wet paint. After one day of curing I also applied epoxy on all the cavities. All the runs and drops can now easily be wiped off.
After letting the epoxy cure for one week it was time to move on with the high build primer. For good adhesion I roughend up the epoxy with Scotch Brite. After masking and degreasing two to three coats of high build primer were applied. High build primer is there to build up material for sanding it down later. It's like a very thin coat of body filler to fill out little imperfections. The high build primer also needs to cure for another week. After removing all the masking it was time to put the car back together for block sanding. All seals, windows, and locks were installed with the freshly restored hinges. Unfortunately I didn't had the time to record the restoration of the door hinges. I disassembled the original ones and sanblasted all the parts. I then recut the threads, chamfered all sharp edges and brought them for yellow zinc plating. On the lathe I made new bushings out of very tough aluminium bronce and also new pins out of silver steel.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

Datsun 240Z Restoration - Final Bodywork Stages (Part 3)
Переглядів 4,6 млн5 місяців тому
In this video you can see all the bodywork getting completed on the Datsun 240Z. I continued on the rusty rocker panel where part 2 ended. Removing the outer shell revealed a lot more rust. I also had to replace the inner rocker panel and the sheet with the complex shape below that. The wheel arch was also quite rusted and also needed to be replaced. I remade all the panels myself out of flat 1...
Datsun 240Z Restoration - The Bodywork Odyssey (Part 2)

In this video I start doing all the bodywork on the car to get it ready for blasting. This is the first half of it. The second half is coming next week in episode 3. First I vacuumed the whole car and removed the sound deadening. Next I needed to remove the undercoating on the rotisserie. I used an infrared lamp and a scraper to remove it. I also did the same on the fenders. Now the car is read...
Datsun 240Z Restoration - The Teardown (Part 1)

This is the first episode from the restoration of a 1973 Datsun 240Z. This car was driven in Los Angeles California and only had one owner. It still had a California blue plate on it and the cars registration expired in 1983, so it was not driven anymore at least for 40 years. For all these years it sat in a garage in California until its owner died and then it got sold to a european car dealer...
I turn a Nut into a tiny Adjustable Wrench
Переглядів 13 млнРік тому
In this video I'm turning a stainless steel M20 nut into a tiny adjustable wrench. All three parts are completely made out of one single nut. First I turned the thread and the hexagon away on the lathe. After cutting a slit into it I was able to open it up with the help of a torch. A few heats later I had a very straight and flat piece of stainless steel. I first went then on the milling machin...
Antique Two Handed Cleaver - Restoration

In this video I'm restoring a very big cleaver. These cleavers are also called „splitter“. They were used by butchers before they had electric saws to help their work. There are a few characteristics that make it very obvious that this is a cleaver: the very thick blade and the big angle on the cutting edge, the hole in the front to hang it on the wall, the very long handle to hold it with two ...
Rusty Deadlocked Vise - Restoration (the 3rd)

In this video I'm restoring a very small rusty and deadlocked Gressel bench vise. Its jaws are just 80mm wide. My friend has found this tiny vise on the steel waste and I thought this would be cool for a video. On first sight it was only seized and had some additional holes. When disassembling I also quickly realized that something on the half round part was not right and after sandblasting I a...
Antique Headphones with Broken Electronics - Restoration

In this video I'm restoring a pair of antique German headphones. I've found these headphones at an online auction for $30 and I thought they look pretty cool for a restoration project. Unfortunately they didn't work anymore. I measured the coils and three of the four were broken. That fact put this little project to a whole new challenge. It required a ton of research to completely understandin...
1930s Desk Lamp - Restoration

In this video I'm restoring a very stylish German desk lamp from the 1930's. This model is called „Vitalux Type G101“ made by „Osram“. Vitalux lamps always had UV bulps. They were advertised as healthy lamps back in the 30's to get your vitamin D at home. My friend has found this lamp at the local junk yard. I really liked its design, so I bought it for $25. To be honest I first thought this sh...

Absolutely excellent. Brilliant skills on show. Some requests, when you weld can you say what kind of welding, and when you replace the material, say what grade of plate and thickness. The finished car will look wonderful I’m sure, I just wonder if you will retain the seventies brown colour?

Alright, I have to know so many things about your workshop at this point: 1) How big is it? I want numbers lol Edit: I'm sorry, was that a _forklift?_ 2) Including machines such as the sandblaster, how many tools do you have? (Btw I love your labels) 3) How much time and money have you put into this? Like, how much did it all cost? Sorry for being long and rambly but I really wish I could do even half the projects you've done even close to how you do them. Viel Liebe aus Amerika 🇺🇸❤️🇨🇭

Came across your smaller restoration videos a few weeks back. Been addicted to them. I like to fix things myself, but I don't have the tools or experience to restore things like you do. Made me a little sad when I came across the recent car videos though. My dad did autobody years back, and I wish I could watch your videos with him. He would be so impressed with how meticulous you are with your work. Truly incredible work.
